Region 3 Rally!!

Rally 2009

The convention plans are under way and the weekend calendar is jam packed full of fun and exciting things this year. If you're expecting the same old contest with a little bit of tag singing in the corner, think again!

This year, when you crack open your schedules to pencil in Education classes with the Four Betty's, and the Mass sing with Chris Noteware, and the new Quartet Afterglow on Friday night, and the Saturday night Party with tag singing, and the phenominal boutique, remember to keep Sunday morning open for the annual Region 3 Rally....whew!

This year, the RMT is Busting the Recession and breakin' out the lawn chairs to enjoy a relaxed day of giving away awards, gifts certificates, raffles and more.  Throw on your flip-flops, grab your morning cocktail, and head on over to the Pantlind Ballroom for a little R&R with your RMT.  Start your morning with some swinging action at the Region 3 Putting Green, and test your luck at the raffle drawings to win fun prizes (Remember to wear your No Sweat pin).

Spend a couple hours with us and hear what's coming up over the next year.  And stick around as we open the floor for a little Q&A with International Board Of Director's Secretary, Renee Porzel.

Once again, Queen's, Four Betty's will be stopping by to bust a chord for us as will the new Quartet Champions.  And, be sure to be there as we introduce our newest annual award for The Chorus of the Year

Also new this year is the Region 3 Workshop Raffle.  Upon registration at the Regional registration table, you'll automatically receive a raffle ticket.  Drop this ticket in the Workshop Raffle drop box any time throughout the weekend and you'll be entered to win a free registration at any Region 3 Education workshop!  Drawings will be held on Sunday morning at the Rally and you must be present to win.  Here's a twist, there will be opportunities to pick up additional raffle tickets, and the Workshop Raffle drop box will be moving around all weekend, so be on the look out.  Remember, the more stuff you do, the more chances you'll have to win free registration at ANY Regional Educational event throughout the year!!

I'm telling you...

YOU'LL KICK YOURSELF IN THE BUTT IF YOU MISS IT!

See you in Grand Rapids,

The Convention Experience

Memories and Anticipation                  by Sara Zawila

This will be my 12th time making the drive from the Northwest suburbs of Chicago to Grand Rapids. Regional weekend is always fun and I look forward to it every year! I still get a little "butterfly in my stomach" when I get to that part of 196 where the highway curves and I can see the city of Grand Rapids for the first time! Chorus and Quartet memories pop into my mind and Showtime's "Barbershop of Seville" CD gets turned up!

My advise to first timers: Make an effort to meet singers from other choruses. It's fun to hang out with your riser buddies, but walking into the hotel each Spring and connecting with someone you know from another chorus is really neat! Be sure to sing around the beautiful fountain at least once and buy something from the hotel boutique. No one at home will have anything like it and you will have helped the US economy!

My list of funny or memorable Regional stories is endless but I especially chuckle when I remember my quartet driving home and  deciding we wanted to rename the quartet. All the way home we kept looking for "signs" of a possible new name along the road. If you've ever driven from Grand Rapids to Chicago, you know there are many questionable billboards specifically marketing entertainment for men. It got to the point where we would just near one of these signs and all 4 of us would start laughing without having said a word!

If you arrive home with full voice, money leftover and energy to burn, then you didn't do it right!

See you in Grand Rapids!!

We need ALL of you to attend and help us set the sound levels!

Regional Convention Update

#5 - Again this year -- Mass Sing!

Some of us feel as though we don't get enough singing time at Regional convention, so here's our big chance!  Please join us in the PANTLIND LOBBY at 3:00pm on Friday - yes, by the fountain - for our 2nd Annual Region 3 Mass Sing, directed by Chris Noteware.

Regional Convention Update

#7 - Celebrate with the Geeks!   **new**

Join the 2009 International Chorus Champion Melodeers for a lovely 3 course dinner in the Ambassador Ballroom - you may find yourself speaking in musical terminology, snorting, and wearing your pants too high, but it will be worth it!  Sign-up form is in the VOICES or on the Region 3 website.

Regional Convention Update

#8 - Badge Procedure   * the sequel *

For many years, you have heard as a competitor you MUST show your badge - it will be enforced again this year!  Contestants must bring their badges to the warm-up room.  If you do not have it, you must go back to your room and get it.  In order for the schedule to stay intact, you will lose warm-up room time - the clock will keep ticking.

Regional Convention Update

#9 - Concession Stand

Once the convention gets started we all get so wrapped up in where to be when and what-to-wear, we sometimes forget to eat!

Never fear - a fabulous concession stand will again be set up in the DeVos hallway by the windows.  Grab a quick bite between contestants or enjoy more leisurely fare during intermission.  There will be a great selection - come hungry and enjoy!

Regional Convention Update

#10 - YWIH and YSF Donations

Remember to bring some extra cash-ola to Friday's Quartet competition, where we will once again be collecting for Region 3's Young Women in Harmony.

Dig even deeper into those wallets at Saturday night's party for "It's In The Can" campaign supporting the Young Singer's Foundation - be generous, it will feel good!

Regional Convention Update

#11 - Regional Revue Sheet

Back by popular demand, recap sheets of both contests will be published for your competitive appetites!  Again this year will be a contest PRevue Sheet with lots of timely scoops - look for it with your registration.

Regional Convention Update

#12 - Contest Playback

Recordings will be made of both competitions, and the master copies will play over the Hotel television system.  Quartets can be viewed Friday evening after contest.  Choruses will take over Saturday evening around dinner time.

Regional Convention Update

#13 - Construction Traffic

Young Singers Foundation

It's in the Can!                                 by Bobbie Slack

Do you know that The Young Singers Foundation is the official charity of Sweet Adeline's' International?  Well, if you didn't know, now you do! The mission of the Foundation is to enrich the lives of young people by supporting educational and performance opportunities in vocal music.

This year the Foundation is implementing a grassroots fundraising program called, It's In The Can.  The goal is to get you as a chorus and us as a region into the habit of supporting the Young Singers Foundation.  A habit is nothing more than an acquired pattern of behavior.  Your job is to introduce this habit to your chorus; each week, pass around a specially marked canister/can/box and collect small bills and spare change for the Young Singers Foundation.  Periodically, someone in the chorus deposits the contents into the chapter's treasury and sends a check for the same amount to headquarters.

The impact of It's In The Can could net huge results for the Young Singers Foundation.  If 150 choruses raise $20 a week for 40 weeks, the Foundation receives $120,000 to fund grants and scholarships to ensure that music continues to affect the lives of young men and women around the world.

I was appointed this position shortly before leaving for the convention in Hawaii.  Upon my arrival in Hawaii, I decided that I did not want to attend the Foundations party empty handed.  I stood in front of my chorus, The Melodeers, and asked them to kindly make donations for the Young Singers Foundation.  In two days, they VERY generously donated $1,300 to the Young Singers Foundation!  WOW!  If I can get them to do that in 2 days, think of how much I am expecting to get from all of Region #3 during contest weekend!

You will be able to go the regional web site to upload the decal artwork for, It's In The Can.
