REGION 3 NEWS
MEMBERS - MUSIC - MAGIC!!
At our last Regional Management Team meeting, we had a goal- and long-range-planning session.  Sounds exciting, right?  Well, in this case, RIGHT!  We were working to find a theme for this team that would reflect how we feel about you, the Region, what needs to be accomplished in the next year, and what will happen when we meet our goals.  Well, here it is:  MEMBERS, MUSIC, MAGIC!!

You see, we on the RMT serve YOU, the MEMBERS; you are our priority.  It's our job and our goal to comply with our International and Regional mission of educating our members, but we also want you to have fun - and we want there to be more of you.  How do we have fun?  By making MUSIC, of course.  And what happens when we get music education?  Our MUSIC gets better! And what happens when our MUSIC gets better?  We, the MEMBERS, get excited about singing again and invite more people - who become MEMBERS!  To us, this sounds like MAGIC!  We do what we want to do anyway, get better at doing it, get more friends to join us, and have more fun.

So there you go - MEMBERS, MUSIC, MAGIC!!  That's our guiding theme for the year - and we hope you'll be able to see that we're serious about getting you, the membership, all the music education, music, and magic you can stand in the next twelve months.

See you around the Region!!

LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP - EVERYONE WELCOME, June 12, 2010
by Kathryn Harry, Marketing Coordinator
Developed for and exclusively offered to Region 3, this leadership workshop will focus on improving your leadership talents and developing new team building skills.

Your faculty members for this educational program are Lynda Keever and Carol Thompson, both accomplished speakers, singers and leaders.  They will help you harness that winning attitude necessary for success. You will learn how to disagree without being disagreeable and how to foster better communication and understanding within your chorus and quartet.  When asked about the seminar, Lynda Keever, said that "many of the topics that will be discussed may be applied to other areas of a woman's life, not just chorus life."

New leaders, returning leaders and wanna-be leaders:  This program is a MUST for all chorus and quartet members who want to motivate their fellow members and be a more valuable, productive asset to their group!

The program is a one day session:

DATE:  June 12, 2010
TIME:   9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
LOCATION:  Clarion Inn
                   5820 S. Franklin Street
                   Michigan City, IN

Tuition is a mere $15.00 per person.  Registration will only be accepted at the door after June 1. If you have any questions about registration, please contact Events Coordinator Shelly Hughes at skhsnoopy@comcast.net or visit our Region 3 website for more information.

DIRECTOR'S WORKSHOP, AUG. 20-22, 2010
by Kathryn Harry, Marketing Coordinator
Region 3's front-line directors will continue toSharon Babb
improve their skills with the help of Sharon Babb, as she leads them through a directors' retreat.

The workshop is the second in a series of three programs presented by Sharon.  The program will focus on topics such as vocal analysis, achieving proper resonant barbershop sound, improving group dynamics, the selection of appropriate music, conducting, developing a music staff and managing a music repertoire.

Sharon Babb has the esteemed honor of being the first to hold the title of Master Faculty in Sweet Adelines International's Faculty Program.  She is also the judge specialist in the sound category, and an approved music judge.

We wanted to make an IMPACT!! at Regional!
by Krickett Kean
What a fantastic weekend!  We achieved our goal and had a blast doing it.  A big THANK YOU to everyone who had anything to do with our success:  our families, coaches, chorus, hairdressers, seamstress, fill-in, other friends and well-wishers, and last but not least, to the people who got us started in this wild and crazy hobby (you know who you are).  We love you all!

Who is IMPACT!!?  The quartet got together in the summer of 2009.  Although we've been a unit for less than a year, we actually have over 100 years of barbershop experience between us, and we believe that our being an all-Melodeers quartet has certain advantages too.
 IMPACT!!

Bev Turbak, bass, has been a Sweet Adeline for 30 years -- Did you know Bev started out as a baritone?

Everybody knows that Diane Landry, tenor, our "Regional Tag Queen," was a "barbershop brat".  She started out as a baritone too.

Krickett Kean, baritone, started out as a lead - go figure!

Sherry Oddo, lead, has never been, nor will she probably ever be, a baritone.  She started out as a lead, and we hope she stays that way!

We're looking forward to the fun and hard work that will accompany our journey to Seattle -- we hope to make an IMPACT!! there too.

Ways & Means Team Retires - New Team Members Wanted!
The Regional Management Team thanks our retiring Ways and Means Team, Pat Catencamp and Jane Wogoman, for doing such a fabulous job for the past several years coordinating vendor sales and organizing and running our boutique not only at our annual Convention but also at our AIM and Winter Workshops. Their hard work has paid off for the region and we will miss them!

We are seeking interested, dynamic, and forward-thinking women who want to work on this very important Regional Team. Pat and Jane will be staying on to help with the transition to a new team, so you will have plenty of guidance. If you want to be a part of the Region 3 Ways and Means Team, please contact Finance Coordinator Alice Deller for more information.

YOUNG WOMEN IN HARMONY (YWIH)
YOUNG WOMEN IN HARMONY REGIONAL CHALLENGE! - An Update
by Diane Landry, Region 3 YWIH Coordinator
At the beginning of 2010, I challenged all chapters to get involved in some way with a young singers program or event through the end of 2010. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for these young singers to experience the barbershop style.

River Bend Chorus
The River Bend chorus visited the girl's choir at Elkhart Central High School in November. They sang a couple Christmas songs, talked about barbershop and demonstrated the 4 parts. They also taught them a Christmas round (Holly Berry) and Christmas Chopsticks.  This introduction to the barbershop style resulted in a request to coach a quartet who was planning to compete at the ISSMA (Indiana State School Music Association) vocal music contest.

Sherry Berkley, River Bend's director, has been working with the Associate Choir Director there, who is very enthusiastic about barbershop.  The chorus has plans to sing for both her middle school class and the high school choir again in the fall and hopefully there will be another quartet, too!

IMPACT!!
IMPACT!! participated in the Festival of Voices, hosted by the Fox River Grove Middle School.  Sybil Perkins, lead of the 2009 Region 5 Quartet Champs, LIMELIGHT graciously filled in for Sherry Oddo.  The quartet explained about the history of barbershop, the barbershop style and some of its unique features, taught some tags and then performed.

Choral-Aires Chorus
Enharmonic Fusion, a coed a cappella group from DeKalb High School, performed at the Choral-Aires Chorus on Monday, May 17, 2010. Then the Choral-Aires showed them what barbershop music is all about.  Following the performance, members of the Choral-Aires-Chorus and visitors were invited to provide a free-will donation, to help the group cover the costs of their recent trip to New York City, where they participated in the International Competition of High School A Cappella and captured Fourth-Place medals.

Grand Rapids Chorus
And of course, there's the Grand Rapids Chorus and their fabulous Singing Angels, the quartet who performed after the quartet contest at this past regional http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA40wiouGrkand wowed everyone with their skills, charm and poise.  They have also performed on two of the Grand Rapids Chorus shows. These young singers, ranging in age from 8-11, all come from musical backgrounds.  Two of them are members of the Grand Rapids Chorus!

I'd like to hear from more chapters.  What are you doing to promote the barbershop experience with young people? What do you want to do?  Don't think your chapter is too small - it can be as easy as inviting a high school choral group to perform at a chorus rehearsal, and then singing for them. That's all!  That experience may plant a seed that could bloom later in life, when they're finished with school and seeking an outlet for their love of singing.

Don't forget to hold the date for our Youth In Harmony High School Contest on February 13, 2011 at Huntley HS in Huntley, Illinois.  You may want to contact your local schools and offer to help coach girls' ensembles and/or quartets for this event.

As the Regional YWIH Coordinator, I'm here to help you with resources and advice.  Be sure to check out the YWIH page on our regional site http://www.region3sweetadelines.org/ywih.htm for resources for music educators and chapters regarding YWIH Ideas.  Or you can contact me to discuss what you need to make it happen.

Make plans now to include young singers in your chapter events. Be sure to keep me posted so I can track progress and publicize your success to the rest of the region!

Thanks for accepting the challenge!

YOUNG WOMEN IN HARMONY SUPER-SING SUNDAY!
by Krickett Kean
In the early afternoon of February 7, 2010, area teenagers and their parents gathered at Huntley High School for the 2010 Youth In Harmony Contest, the girls' portion being sponsored by Lake Michigan Region 3.  A new format this year had the groups alternating between girls and boys, providing more variety for the audience, less "down time" between contestants, and giving the judges a bit more time to do their jobs.

The high school quartets and ensembles took the stage and sang their hearts out.

Jaw Droppers
Jaw Droppers from Barrington High School won the gold quartet medals.

The Main Course
The Main Course from Huntley HS took the silver.

The Four-Tune Tellers
The Four-Tune Tellers of Barrington HS rounded out the top 3.

In the Ensemble Division, the Gren-a-Darlings from Elk Grove HS won top honors, with Doremigos from Barrington HS and Melody Lane from Huntley HS snagging 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.  As in the past, appropriate cash awards were given to the high school music departments that had fielded the winning and placing groups.

Gren-a-Darlings

Following the contest and before the awards, Chi-Town Sound Quartet performed a short set - the kids welcomed them like rock stars!

It was a very busy afternoon:  the contest, the guest performance, the awards.  When all was said and done, the auditorium emptied like magic - and everybody got home in time to watch the Super Bowl.

CHORUS UPDATES
BATTLE CREEK
by Publicity Committee
On May 10, 2010, the Battle Creek Chorus of Sweet Adelines, along with their much loved director, Julie Zehnder (a Certified Director for 31 years), enjoyed a delicious dinner, lots of celebration, and of course, lots of singing.

We celebrated the fact that the Battle Creek Chorus has grown, in a period of two years, from having 21 members to this year having 28 singers on board!  Indeed, Something to Celebrate!

After dinner, an installation ceremony was held to recognize the new board of directors and officers, as well as honor Chorus members, both old and new, who have significantly contributed to the fulfillment of Chorus goals.

The Sweet Adeline of the Year award is presented to a chorus member who shows total dedication to doing whatever it takes to help the Chorus and Director.  She is a true spirit of Sweet Adelines with the special smile and spark of joy and pride in herself and her Chorus, whether at rehearsal or on the risers performing at shows.

Celebration of this year's Sweet Adeline of the Year (SAY) was an emotional event for the whole chorus.  The presentation of the SAY award was truly a surprise when baritone section leader and 2009 Sweet Adeline of the Year, Marilyn Kidd, presented, with the greatest respect and honor, the 2010 Liz Lapekas ((SAY) award to her mom, Maggie Black.

Maggie kudos

Maggie is 86 years "young" and can always be counted on to be there for rehearsals and all shows.  Even if Maggie is struggling with health or other issues, there's no holding her down or keeping her away from Chorus!  She loves to sing and lead!  Maggie truly loves her Sweet Adelines and they love her.  She is a terrific example of what Sweet Adelines is all about and is a wonderful inspiration for other members who want to embrace the Spirit and be the best that they can be.  Maggie joined Sweet Adelines in the 1950's with a Kalamazoo Chorus and has been with the Battle Creek Chorus for 10 years. Many more wonderful years to you Maggie, and many more shows and travels with your Chorus family!

The Battle Creek Chorus, with Julie Zehnder directing, was proud to have competed in the Region 3 competition held May 1, 2010 in Grand Rapids.  The Chorus had a lot of fun and improved greatly in the categories of Sound, Expression, and Showmanship.

Battle Creek Chorus 2010

The Chorus is, with "great excitement", learning two brand new songs to take to Competition in 2011.   It will be fun!!

GREAT LAKE SOUND
by Johanna Williams
Wow! What a fantastic competition. Congratulations to all the participants. The theme party was fun. We were excited for being recognized for the 39% increase in membership of Great Lake Sound. We want to thank the region for their generous gift to the chorus.

Although we turned twenty in March, we will have a birthday celebration later this summer. We are busy working on plans. The region will be invited along with former members and our "groupies."

Have a great summer. We're looking forward to seeing everyone at Fall AIM.

MELODEERS NEWS
by Sue Swan

What an awesome Regional Competition in Grand Rapids!  The Melodeers' feet have not yet touched the ground!  We're on our way to Houston and we couldn't be happier!

First, we are so proud of our quartets.  The Melodeers were represented by 6 quartets.  A big congratulations to IMPACT!!, our new Regional champions winning in their first contest together.  We are also proud of Chi Town Sound (2nd place), Snap Shot (4th place), Jazz Katz, On Q, and Jokers Wild.

Next, we are amazed and proud to have 26 dual members representing 13 different choruses singing with us.  In addition we have five chorus directors in Melodeers.  Our "sister" choruses did so well, and we are especially excited for Deb Peters and Edge O'Town for their 5th place win and most improved chorus award.

The Melodeers are still grinning from ear to ear after breaking the record we set three years ago with our new score of 751.  It was an absolute joy performing our new up-tune for our regional friends as well as the judges.  We are excited for our "sisters-in-song", the Choral-Aires, and their highest score ever.  It will be a double treat for Region 3 to share the stage with them in Houston, so we're anxious for the final word and we're crossing our fingers for them until then.

Melodeers 751

Many thanks to Region 3 for celebrating our 50th anniversary with us and the Choral-Aires. The 50s party, entertainment, quartets, and cake were a perfect way to end a fabulous day!

We're so proud of Renee Porzel and lucky to claim her as one of our own.  Renee is the President Elect and Showmanship Judge Specialist for 2010-12, and future International President for 2012-14.

Our next big event is our 50th Anniversary Show November 20 at 2 p.m. at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL.  It will be an afternoon show with a reception immediately following.  We're "reviving" the best of the past, so come and enjoy a lot of great memories and see many old friends. Ticket information will soon be available via our website: www.Melodeers.org.

MIDWEST CROSSROAD CHORUS HAD A BUSY SPRING!
by Pat Spilotro
The Midwest Crossroad Chorus is so excited!  We are having an action packed year which started with a BANG! getting two new songs ready for regional competition.  Then in February we were hit with another BANG!  MCC was invited to compete in the Division AA category at the 2010 Harmony Classic in October. Now how exciting was that! We get to join our other competing Region 3 Chorus', Prairie Echoes and Grand Rapids in Seattle. We knew we had a lot of work ahead, but we just marched on through.

In March, we took some time during our rehearsal, to help out the local university, University of St. Francis, advertise the TOMS Shoes project by wearing TOMS.  The students collected money in order to purchase 90 pairs of shoes to give to children in need in the greater Joliet area. With every pair they purchased, TOMS gave a new pair of shoes to a child in need somewhere in the world.

TOMS Shoes

Every year we look forward to regionals, seeing old friends and meeting new ones.  This year we were so excited to show off our new set.  We felt like kids on Christmas morning.  We were so proud of our Director Tori Hicks, who did a wonderful job emceeing the 2010 Quartet Contest and congratulations to our quartets Chi-town Sound, Snapshot, & Jokers Wild.  When the competition came to an end we were please to be the Region 3 Division AA 1st Place winner.  It was a great, great day.  Hooray!

RIVER BEND
by Sherry Berkley
What a fabulous Convention and Competition! Congratulations to everyone who competed and to our new Region 3 Champions - Impact!!, Melodeers, Midwest Crossroad, and Prairie Echoes! And a big thank you to the Convention Steering Committee and Regional Management team for making it all so memorable.

River Bend is back in the saddle and gearing up for a summer full of fun, new music and performances. We'll be singing at fish fries, ice cream socials, a Summer Park Concert in Niles, as well as performing the national anthem at a South Bend Silver Hawks baseball game. We're following it all up with a major membership drive this fall.

A safe and fun-filled summer to all!

WESTERN LIGHTS
by Sue Brander
Whew!  Another wonderful Regional Competition has come and gone.   Western Lights Chorus was delighted to receive 2nd Place, Division AA Medals.  Congratulations to all the winners as well as all competitors!  We are all truly blessed to be surrounded by some of the most talented Sweet Adelines in the organization...not the least of which are Chicago Fire and the Four Bettys who provided some mighty hot entertainment throughout the weekend!

We're fortunate to have several summer performances lined-up including singing the National Anthem at the Kane County Cougars game.  That always provides an evening of fun for the chorus and their family members.

Since we can't all escape for a pre-Holiday cruise, we'll be doing the next best thing by presenting our annual fall show, "Let's Get Away From It All!" Details will be available in the next issue of Voices.    Meanwhile, have a happy, safe summer.

SWEET ADELINES INTERNATIONAL
IES GLOBAL 2010 CANCELLED!
Citing an assessment of the budgeted cost of holding the events vs. the lack of pre-registration for them, the International Board of Directors regrettably announced the immediate cancellation of all five IES Global education events planned for North America in 2010 and Europe and the Pacific Rim in 2011. The Visual Leaders Workshop scheduled for IES West and the Young Women in Harmony Festival scheduled for IES Central also are cancelled.
