Convention Recap
Hello Region 3 Members and Friends!

It was a fully packed weekend ... from the Thursday night Briefing, to Friday's Sound Check, Mass Sing and Quartet Competition; then Saturday's rehearsals and Chorus Competition and a great Party with the Winners' Circle; finishing with a President's Breakfast, a Rally and a Membership Kick-Off on Sunday.  Mix in fun with friends from around the region, add in some sparklies from The Boutique and it all added up to a fabulous Region 3 Convention in Grand Rapids!

Congratulations to the 14 quartets and 520 chorus women who shared their joy of harmony in competiton performances.  The prospect of performing for our peers and a panel of judges can be daunting, but the actual experience is always exhilarating!  Bravo competitors!!!

2008 Region 3 Quartet Champs   by Cathie Zimmerman
 Chi-Town

"Have our feet touched the ground yet?"  Let's put it this way ... I think we saved some gas money by floating home from Grand Rapids!  Wow, what a weekend!  Chi-Town Sound is thrilled to be Region 3's new Quartet Champions.  We would like to thank our coaches:  Joan Boutilier, Renee Porzel and Jim Arns for helping us jump-start our new sound.  We look forward to working with them, and and striving for new heights as we begin our journey to Hawaii.  Oh, what an amazing journey it will be!

The weekend in Grand Rapids was a dream come true.  We'd like to share a few of our favorite moments:

Vanessa:  My favorite moment of the weekend was all of the genuine, heartfelt congratulations, giggles and tears of joy that were passed on to us from the ENTIRE region.  WOW!!  It's a feeling that can not be put into words.  A "little birdie" told us along the way, "You are going to take Region 3 by surprise!"  Oh! I just love surprises!!!  It is truly an honor for Chi-Town Sound to represent Region 3 in Hawaii.  Aloha!

Cathie: I will always remember how much my cheeks hurt by the time I hit my pillow on Friday night - the reasons for smiling never stopped!  Starting with the rush of people and compliments we received when we entered the auditorium after our performance, all the way through to being asked to sing by a group of enthusiastic teenage girls in the hallway on the way to bed.  Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive - thank you!

Chris:  My favorite moments were when Jim tried to stretch way up and hug me from the floor while I was up on the stage; and when Lynn Vaughn, my favorite baritone, put my medal around my neck; and then when we stood up there together, the four of us, hugging!

Shelley: The highlight of the weekend for me was being welcomed on stage by the Winner's Circle on Saturday night.  Not only was it great to be "sung in" by those accomplished and talented ladies, but I felt such an outpouring of genuine love and well wishes from the entire room!  Region 3 is the best!

Thank you, Region 3, for the most wonderful weekend of our journey... so far!

 No Sweat Logo

Thanks to so many of you for attending the Region 3 Rally on Sunday morning.  We had over 150 in attendance and based on the feedback so far, we are in for a very exciting year ahead.  Very soon the website will be updated soon with the new membership campaign logo and lots of fun stuff.  There will also be opportunity to purchase some of the cool stuff with the new logo on it that you saw on Sunday.  This is really fun since the logo belongs ONLY to Region 3. What a cool way to get ourselves out there~!  So there will be order forms available at future functions and possibly on the website.  I invite every single one of you who is interested in being a part of this great campaign to get in touch with me so you can help out with in any way you are interested.

I and my committee will be getting in contact with every one of our choruses personally so that we can come visit you and help you wih some of the terrific things we discussed on Sunday. It will also give us an opportunity to see what your doing and maybe use your ideas to share with other choruses as well.  If you have any ideas about how to make membership a seamless transition for guests, please drop a line and share them with me. The whole idea of the "No Sweat" campaign is to just make things easier for you, easier for your guests, and easier for anyone who's lives you touch.  "Becoming a member of Region 3 is No Sweat.. just come on in and let us show you around."

We are one of the best Regions in the world...here's to becoming one of the biggest too!

Thanks so much for such awesome representation at the Rally, I hope to see you all throughout the year.

Membershiply yours,

Penny Hock

After a fun, crazy, barbershop harmony filled weekend in Grand Rapids, I'm assuming we're all back at home, back to scrubbing toilets and making our own dinners and working in or outside the home.  Our moments of fame and fortune - well, our 6 minutes on stage, is over - much too quickly - and chorus life has resumed.  Many congratulations to Choral-Aires and Chi-Town Sound for their winning performances!!

I had the privilege, as the incoming EdC, of meeting with the judges following contest to receive their comments and suggestions as to ways we can improve our craft.  I'll include these suggestions as bullet points for both quartets and choruses.  Lynda Keever, Debi Batchelor and I were at the table and we all feel that these suggestions are excellent insights to areas we can ask Jim and Renee to review and teach as part of our Region 3 AIM weekend.  Please consider the value in having two of the top coaches in all of Sweet Adelines, the 4-time International Champion Director, a Showmanship Judge and International BOD member as our Fall Faculty!  Other regions are jealous - trust me!  So plan on attending!  I promise you will walk away from the weekend knowing more than you know now!

Judges Comments

Sound - Quartet

  • High level of vocal skills demonstrated by most quartets, now it's a matter of vocal stamina and consistent application of those skills.
  • Fine tuning still needs cleaning up
  • Top 5 quartets need to deal with the above and then trust and perform with passion

 Sound - Chorus

  • Continue working on individual vocal skills
  • Pitch taking - YES, please do so and make it a part of your program!
  • Tuning at all levels still needs attention
  • Barbershop is not an easy art form to perform and all levels must continue to hone their individual skills (hmm, she said this twice, guess it's important!)

 Music - Quartet

  • Several quartets chose arrangements beyond their skills - go for strong, square, solid songs
  • Continue work on harmony accuracy
  • Take a pitch!

 Music - Chorus

  • Better song choices here
  • Take a pitch!
  • Continue work on harmony accuracy
  • Remember energy comes from an emotional investment in the words you are singing

 Expression - Quartet

  • Skills generally good
  • Build stamina and resonance for better unity
  • There are excellent role models in Region #3 - USE THEM!
  • Take a pitch!

 Expression - Chorus

  • Vocal foundation is apparent, strengthen technique
  • Pretty difficult musical selections to be consistently successful
  • Higher achieving choruses - lots of technique shown now become freer
  • Regional leadership excellent - USE THEM!
  • Take a pitch!

 Showmanship - Quartet

·         Most quartets needed a stronger vocal foundation

·         Most quartets needed a stronger sense of unity

·         Good sense of joy - now add passion and drama

Showmanship - Chorus

  • Some aggressive visual plans are interfering with musical plans
  • More foundational vocal skills work is needed
  • More individual characterization could assist in the development of a passionate performance
  • Many directors not involved enough in the performance side of directing

Well - there you have it folks - probably no surprises in any of these statements and we will address nearly all of these statements during our Fall AIM.

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away!"   Enjoy the moments!

Winners' Circle: The Facts    by Amy Brinkman

Many of you came to the Saturday night party at Regional contest and were there for the singing by the Winners' Circle.  What an audience you are to sing for!  However, many of you also have asked questions about Winners' Circle, so I thought I'd take some time and answer some of your questions now!

1.    Who gets to be in the Winners' Circle?

Winners' Circle is made up of members of ANY quartet who represented Region 3 at the International contest.  That means First Place quartet winners as well as Wild Card quartet members who also competed at International.

2.    Why are there some faces in Winners' Circle that I don't recognize?

Well, there could be a few reasons ... first, you might need new glasses!  Or maybe it's that we've all aged so well, you just don't recognize us?  (Ok, that might be a stretch ...)  Seriously, it is probably because you didn't know that Winners' Circle also has members in it who have competed and won with a quartet in another Region!  If members from a championship quartet happen to move into our Region or are singing with a chorus in our Region, they too can sing with the Winners' Circle.  Cool, huh?

3.    Who gets to direct Winners' Circle?

We are lucky as a group that we have several front-line chorus directors who are also champion quartet singers!  They direct on a rotating basis to keep things interesting from year to year.

4.    What else does Winners' Circle do in the Region?

We have been able to sponsor an Annual Reception/Party for all competing quartets on Thursday night at Regional contest.  It's a way for all of us "who've been there" to help the current competitors relax a bit before contest day.  We also provide a little financial support to our International-bound quartets.  And for the past couple of years, we've had some of our members offer their time and talents to give PVI's (private vocal instruction sessions) to the Regional members at AIM.  We are planning to do that again this year in September, so if you are interested in receiving a PVI, please watch for details!  We'll try and have enough Winners' Circle members to accommodate your needs!

5.    How can I become part of Winners' Circle?

KEEP SINGING!  If you aren't currently in a quartet, find one!  Quartet singing starts with trying out different voices with yours; singing a tag after chorus; finding a corner and three other voices at Regional; coming to AIM and looking around for other singers ... once you start, you won't want to stop until you've found the quartet for you.  Then compete!  I know it might look and sound scary, but it is absolutely the BEST way to make you a better singer!  When you know that you are the only one responsible for carrying your particular part, you really will be amazed at what you are capable of.  And keep singing!  If your first quartet doesn't work out, keep trying!  I'll bet that anyone who's been in a quartet knows it also makes you a better chorus singer too!  Wouldn't all of our directors LOVE to have a chorus made up of quartet singers?  And wouldn't we all love to sing in a chorus of quartet singers?  That's why singing with Winners' Circle is so fun ... a chance to sing with a chorus of all quartet singers!

So keep singing, competing and maybe sometime in the future, we'll proudly induct YOU into the Winners' Circle as well!

Thanks for supporting us each year at contest ... see you again in 2009!

Convention 2008   by Shelly Hughes

Another great convention and competition is in the record books.  I hope you had as great of time as I did.  It is always so much fun to see and sing with all the members of Region 3.

The judging panel also enjoyed being in our region.  While brought in for their musical expertise, they were impressed with the solid vocal skills they saw and heard from each group.  The panel also commented on the warmth and kindness they received from all of our members.  The Region 3 atmosphere is one we all cherish and is wonderful tribute to each of us.

The convention would not happen if it were not for many members contributing their time and efforts.  They are an impressive group and I appreciate everything they have contributed.

A final HUGE thank you to the Four Bettys.  They did so many things on behalf of our region - radio interview, sound check, mass sing, mic test and royal performance - at that was just on Friday!  You are wonderful representatives of the region and the organization.  We are so proud of you.  Continue to enjoy your reign!

Finally, if you would like to be a part of future events, we are always looking for help.  Whether it is an educational event or convention, day of help or a seat on a committee, we need you.  Email is the only requirement.  If you are interested, please e-mail me at skhsnoopy@comcast.net.

There is a saying that "The greatest learning occurs during times of adversity."  Many choruses and quartets went away from the weekend having accomplished their plan. However, if your scores and placement did not reflect your plan, this is a great opportunity to learn and build for next year.

We are all competitors by nature.  Seasoned competitors know how to take any event and use the information to better prepare for the "next time".  It is a little unfortunate that we only get one opportunity a year to benchmark our progress.  Wouldn't it be great if we could play a series and best of seven wins?  In reality, though, only one quartet and chorus will score the highest points and be proclaimed  "Champion"!!  Regional Competition really shows "highest scoring performance for the day."  And hopefully that is the quartet or chorus that can most often put that level of performance consistently out there.  Competitors should be recognized - they worked hard to accomplish their goals.  That is one reason that SAI offers Division awards, to level the playing field for small and mid-size choruses.

We are a funny crowd.  Too often we let six-minutes on competition stage change our self-image instead of using it to springboard into a better performance in the future.  I would like to suggest that while some believe adversity builds character, it more often REVEALS it.  One of the elements of top performers in any organization is the ability to be resilient and to rebound from adverse situations.  Top performers have this quality and will persevere even when goals fall short.  They have an innate belief in their abilities and do not let one setback keep them from their goals.  We have a saying in sales, SW< SW<SW<N or Some Will, Some WON'T, So What -NEXT!!  Top Performers have a NEXT mentality.

Even Top Performers sometimes fall short of their goal.  Ask any high achiever.  We have those examples right here at home.  How many times did the Four Bettys come in second at Regional before moving to the International stage?  Even 4-time International Champion Chorus Melodeers placed second in Las Vegas.  And what did they both do?  Bettys went on to win at Regional and ultimately capture the Queen's crown and Melodeers went back to Regional Competition the next year and scored the highest regional score to date (741) within the organization.  Champions have a resilient, "SO WHAT - NEXT" mentality.

Now is a great time to start thinking about preparing for the upcoming year and I hope all of you who attended the Regional Rally came away with information that will aid your efforts.  Build it and they will come.  Your Regional Management Team is ready and willing to assist you.

Congratulations to every competing chorus and quartet.  And a huge shout-out to all our Top Performers.  Woo Hoo!!

I look forward to seeing you at AIM weekend September 12 -14 featuring faculty Jim Arns and Renee Porzel.  Can't wait to see you there!!!
