A Letter from Jukebox
Dear Members of Lake Michigan Region 3,
The Jukebox is no longer accepting any quarters! Yes, that's right -
after 5 years of being together, we have decided to hang up our
playback list and be on our separate ways.
We have indeed enjoyed singing for you not only on the regional and
international contest stages, but also at all those wonderful shows
and glows, regional workshops, coaching events and private parties.
We thank you so much for all the love and support you have given
us. It has been a great ride!
With love -

Young Women in Harmony Regional Challenge! by Diane Landry, Region 3 YWIH Coordinator
Here's the deal:
Let's get all chapters involved in some way with a YWIH program or event
through the end of 2010. Is everyone up
to the challenge?
As the Regional YWIH Coordinator, I'm here to help you with
resources and advice. Have you checked
out the new YWIH page on our regional site? www.region3sweetadelines.org/ywih.htm It has loads of resources for music educators
and chapters regarding YWIH Ideas. Or you can contact me to discuss what you
need to make it happen.
Maybe you think your chapter is too small to host a
festival? No problem - almost anything
involving young singers meets the goal.
You could include a girls high school barbershop quartet on your next
show, or perhaps contact a local Girl Scout troop to assist with a
"Singing for Others" Activity Day. If the girls learn a song and
participate in a performance, they get a new badge.
Did you know that Sweet
Adelines International will be hosting an International Young Women in Harmony
Festival next summer in St. Louis, as part of our IES Global Central? You could help financially support a girls
quartet, or help an educator to attend.
Our regional YWIH High School contest takes place February
7, 2010 at Huntley HS in Huntley,
IL. You could contact your local
schools and offer to help coach girls ensembles and/or quartets for this event.
SAI has a free Music Educators Package that contains comprehensive
information for teaching young voices four-part harmony along with
music, and a learning CD. To order, provide the
school and choral director mailing information to the Education Department at
SAI headquarters. Or you could call
800/992-7464 or e-mail education@sweetadelineintl.org. Or send me the
information and I'll order the package for the school.
Start making your plans now to include YWIH in
your chapter events. Be sure to keep me
posted so I can track progress and publicize your success to the rest of the
region!

RMT MEETING HIGHLIGHTS - OCTOBER 2009
by Sherry Berkley
Newly
designed regional website will be up and running prior to International
Convention. We will also be using a new web hosting service. The current web
host had all of its servers crashed so the website was temporarily located
piggybacked onto River Bend's website. (Note: The website was down for 8 days
before we made the decision to launch the new site with a new host, GreenGeeks,
a "green" and less expensive service).
Next
Newsletter will be out around December 1st. Lynda asked new
directors for bios to be put in the newsletter to introduce them to the region.
Ann
discussed plans for our Winter Workshop. It will include classes for budding
arrangers with Penny Hock, classes on the judging categories with Joan
Boutilier, as well as PVIs (including visual ones with Judy Herrick).
Plans
are in the works for PVI hubs throughout the region.
AIM
with Peggy and Dale was a success and a great learning experience!
Shelly
announced that our judging panel for 2010 is Ozzie Mask, Linda Masterson, Patti
Burklund, and Becki Hine.
Jane
Wogoman has been accepted by International as a Panel Secretary for
competitions. She will be panel secretary for Region 17 contest the weekend of
May 6-9, 2010.
The
RMT will send a bottle of wine and a card to all of our competing quartets in
Nashville.
Shelly
will coordinate with Joan to determine the date and time of the Regional Rally
in Nashville and an email blast will be sent by Sherry to all in the region
announcing this prior to Nashville.
DIRECTOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
by Stacey Haskins
CHECK IT OUT ! ! ! Do you know the names of your Region 3 officers? If you do, you already know the answer to some of the questions in
the Management exam for the Director's Certification Program.
Take a look at this program to obtain either your certification for
directors or distictions for section leaders. Region 3 has worked with
Sweet Adelines
International to offer the Section Leaders Distinction and Rewards
(SLiDeRs) where music team members will be rewarded each time they complete
three of the tests. You already know alot of this information and what better
way to build skills in your section while you teach the barbershop way of
singing.
I come from a musical family, sang my first solo at the age of 6 in my parent's
church and have been performing in one way or another ever since. From college,
I went into church work for over 20 years where I directed choirs of all ages.
I also directed the church drama departments and did the large, seasonal
musicals some of which involved 200 people. I have been involved in local
theater: acting, directing, set design, costume design and construction.
I have
always enjoyed quartet singing. In fact, I currently sing baritone in an a
cappella jazz quartet called "Half-n-Half". I got involved with barbershop when
I started dating a fabulous red-headed bass from Grand Rapids named Leah. I was impressed to see
everyone so committed to perfecting a musical craft. It was easy to get sucked
into their performances and have never regretted a minute!
I was excited
when Mid-Lakes accepted my application to direct and am looking forward to
seeing what all we can accomplish.
NICOLE CHAPEN, Director of RIVERSIDE CHORUS
Nicole has been a member of Sweet Adelines
International since 1996. She began right before her 17th birthday by
joining the Prairie Echoes Chorus. She was with Prairie Echoes through
their first two Harmony Classic wins. After a move to the Wisconsin/Illinois
state line, Nicole joined the Stateline Harmony Chorus in Region 22. After the director
departed in February of 2008, Nicole, with the encouragement of a friend, stepped in
and directed Stateline Harmony Chorus in their regional contest. In September
of 2008 Nicole auditioned and became the current director of Riverside Chorus
in Elgin.
Other than directing Riverside, Nicole sings in the Rock Valley College Concert Choir
while attending Rock Valley
College on a full time basis. She is studying voice under Kathy
Herdemann. Nicole's chosen profession will be educator with the hopes of bringing
barbershop style music to all who cross her path. In her spare time she loves to
spend time with her husband and three children, Alexis-9, Kimberly-6, and
Jonathan-3, and let's not forget the dog, Rosie. If Nicole finds a spare moment
or two after all that she really enjoys spending time with her friends who
continue to help her on this journey of life.
CHORUS UPDATES
CHORAL-AIRES
by Debbie Fletcher and Tiffany Self
The
Choral-Aires were proud to represent Region 3 on the International stage in
Nashville and to be present to honor the Melodeers as they wound down their
championship year. We truly appreciate everyone's support before and after
the competition.
It was an exciting year of "firsts" at this year's International
convention, with the Harmony Classic and Rising Star competitions being added
to the week's activities. Also, it was fun to be a part of setting the Guiness
World Book record for the World's Largest Singing Lesson, with 6,651
participating!
Upon returning from Nashville, we jumped right in to hosting guest nights and
learning new music leading up to our guest performance again on the Brotherhood
of Harmony men's chorus Christmas show, "Christmas Around the World",
on December 19th at Harper College in Schaumburg. If you are interested
in attending, please go on our website (www.choral-aires.org),
for more information. We would be happy to reserve a ticket for you!
We also will be providing music at the Sunday morning worship on December 6th
at the Elmhurst Presbyterian Church where we rehearse. This is a great way to
share our music and let them know how much we appreciate them letting us rent
their facility every Monday night.
It's a busy time of the year for smaller performances, too, like tree lighting
ceremonies, etc. The Choral-Aires Chorus is looking forward to the holidays,
and we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and
harmonious holiday season and New Year.
Before the holiday season hits in full force,
mark your calendar to attend our annual fashion show. The show will be
Saturday, March 6, at Drury Lane Oak Brook. Keep an eye on our website for more
details; we would love to have you there!
GRAND RAPIDS: Morning Warblers
by Linda Rozema
A
quartet from the Grand Rapids Chorus sings National Anthems before the early
morning start of the Grand Rapids Marathon on October 18, 2009. Over3600
runners registered for the race events.
(l-r) Pattee Bender (Baritone), Leah Williams
(Bass), Linda Rozema (Lead), Sandy Recker (Tenor)
Francine, Race Committee, wrote:
"Thanks once again to your Sweet Adelines quartet for the absolutely
phenomenal performance of the U.S. and Canadian National Anthems at the Metro
Health Grand Rapids Marathon yesterday morning!
The singing of the National Anthem before most big U.S. sporting events
is not only traditional, but also an expression of our country's pride and
appreciation for the freedoms we sometimes take for granted."
Susan, Marathon Runner, wrote to Don
Kern, Race Director:
"Words simply cannot adequately describe how grateful I am to you and
all the volunteers who organized the 2009 GR marathon. What a wonderful
experience!!! From the very start with
the singing of the Canadian national anthem (made me feel very proud of my home
country even though I live here now)...to the very end when I crossed that
finish line in tears and gave you the worlds biggest hug...the return embrace I
received from you was so heartfelt."
GLS SHOW CHORUS (GREAT LAKE SOUND)
by Johanna Williams
November has been a busy month for Great Lake
Sound.
Kickin' It Up a
Notch was the theme of the show this year. We did change our venue to a banquet
hall across the street from our previous site. Parking was better and we had
plenty of room to prepare for the show. Our wonderful auctioneer, David Parks, kept
everything moving. At times I felt I was watch a tennis match. For the first
time we had a silent auction. It was fun seeing our new members jump into the
thick of things.
Coaching season is upon us. Our director, Carol
Thompson, made arrangements for Jukebox to work with us. What a great learning
experience that was! Sectionals were fantastic. . .and we had a private
performance. The day just flew by. Queen Lynda
Keever will be working with us in December. We are indeed blessed to have so
much talent in Region 3.
GLS wishes everyone a wonderful holiday season and
a great new year.
MELODEERS: NASHVILLE! How we love ya! How we love ya!
by Allison DeStefano
All we can really say is "WOW!" It was an unbelievable week for the Melodeers
as outgoing champions and a perfect ending flourish to a wonderful championship
year!
Here's a bit about our exciting week:
First, we had the pleasure of visiting each of the competing
choruses to wish them well and deliver good luck fortune cookies. It was so much fun to see the choruses in
"action" before they hit the stage.
Next we had our swan song performance. This was a true "rock star" moment for the
Melodeers! A full arena - everyone
chanting our name! None of us have ever
experienced anything so amazing! We
brought the directors on stage wearing geek glasses and it brought the house
down. It was lovely to see all the
directors embracing their inner geeks!
Finally, we had the pleasure of teaching an education
class. We all looked at the ballroom at
the Renaissance hotel that morning (when we arrived for our makeup checks at 6
a.m.) and thought, "that's a lot of chairs."
But we ended up having nearly 1200 people attend the class! WOW!
There was a rush of emotions as we entered that full ballroom and it was
an incredible privilege to have that many people there while we shared the
"secrets" to our success!
So, after that fantastic Nashville high, the Melodeers are
shifting focus to our upcoming Holiday Show, Regional Contest, and our Fifty
Fabulous Years event.
The holiday show is on Saturday, December 12th at
2 p.m. at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. More information and tickets are available on
our web site: www.melodeers.org. Hope to see you there!
It's also not too early for you to mark your calendars for
our Fifty Fabulous Years event. The Melodeers
are turning 50 - so you know there MUST be a party! The event will be on Saturday, June 26, 2010
at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. More details will follow.
It's been an absolute honor to be champions representing not
only our organization, but also our beloved Region 3. Thank you so much for all of your love and
support!

RIVER BEND
by Kristin Farwig
River Bend chorus started out the fall "Trippin' through the
60's" and landed on our feet to lead into our Christmas season. River Bend's
annual show was a fun trip back in time to the 60's. The show featured hit
songs from the 1960's and a bit of a spoof on the "Wizard of Oz". But instead
of finding the Wizard of Oz, we had to find the "Wizard of the 60's" to get us
back to 2009. Crazy clothes, funky hair, groovy songs and lots of great
singing. What a time we had putting this show together.
Once we arrived back in 2009, we hit the road to get ready
for Christmas with our "Sing for the Season" membership campaign. The last 6 weeks
we spent working on Christmas music and sharing our love of barbershop with 6
prospective members. We wrapped up our Christmas "sing for the season" event
with a concert for our friends and family on December 1st. We had a
terrific time with our guests, and the concert was a fabulous time to put it
all together.
Now it's on to contest prep!!!! Ah, the time is here.
Christmas is behind us and now it's time to start focusing on our contest set.
Ballad, uptune, costumes, coaching sessions, choreo, makeup, and sectionals......lather,
rinse and repeat. May 1 here we come. See you all there.
WESTERN LIGHTS
by Sue Brander
We enjoyed Fall AIM Weekend with Dale and Peggy. What a
wealth of knowledge! In addition, we were honored to perform at
the Saturday Night Show. Now, we're spreading the joy of the season
with a plethora of Holiday
performances and gearing-up for our next show as the Script Committee goes into overdrive. We've got several enthusiastic new members to help us welcome
the New Year as we send best wishes to all of you, from each of us at Western
Lights.
